Johnny Depp v. Amber Heard : How it all began?

Depp was asked by one of his lawyers what the domestic abuse allegations had cost him.

“Nothing less than everything,” he replied. “When the allegations were rapidly circling the globe, telling people that I was a drunken cocaine-fueled menace who beat women — suddenly in my 50s – it’s over.

“No matter the outcome of this trial,” “the second these allegations were made, I was already lost,” he said.

I’m pretty sure that over the last few years you may have heard some rumors about the tumultuous relationship that was shared by Johnny Depp and Amber Hurd, which ended in divorce back in 2016.

You may have heard that she accused him of beating her up during their marriage and you may also have seen some of the photos that have been shared around the internet where she shows her face bruised and bloodied up in various ways.

you may have heard about Johnny Depp’s allegations, that Amber Hurd is the one who’s been abusing Johnny Depp all this time and maybe even something about a severed finger.

Maybe you’ve even heard some audio of amber and johnny talking to each other where she admitted to essentially beating on him and to top things off you may have even heard some kind of a rumor about a prank about poop in bed.

So before we get too caught up in all of these different stories and vignettes that are swirling around let’s get back to the basics of where this all started and what the lawsuit is all about.

In 2009, Johnny met Heard on the set of ‘The Rum Diary’

Apparently Johnny Depp and Amber Heard met on the set of the “Rum Diaries.” They apparently dated for several years and then in 2015, Depp and Heard married in a private ceremony. According to all kinds of accounts, the relationship was tumultuous from the beginning to the end and then even past the end of marriage.

the Rum Diary

In 2016, Heard filed for divorce from Depp and accused him of physical abuse.

In 2016, it became clear to both of them that the marriage was no longer working and was probably going to be ending fairly soon. It seems that both sides are indicating that they had wanted the divorce first but Amber Heard was the one who filed for divorce in May 2016.

We don’t know whether Amber filed for divorce because she had had enough of the marriage or whether she filed for divorce more in a strategic move because she knew that otherwise Johnny Depp would be filing for divorce and wanted to get the jump on him.

At the same time that she filed for divorce, she also filed for a domestic violence restraining order and on May 27 2016 she showed up to court with what looked like bruises on her face. With an allegation that just five days before johnny had gotten into an altercation with her and ended up throwing his cell phone at her
face.

The public of course was alerted to this and there was a lot of media attention on their divorce. Eventually, they settled the divorce matter and Amber agreed to withdraw her domestic violence restraining order and Johnny agreed to give her seven million dollars.

You may have heard that she publicly pledged to donate half of the seven million dollars to the ACLU and the other half to the children’s hospital of Los Angeles but according to information that has come out in the process of this litigation it sounds like she hasn’t donated much of anything to either one

#metoo movement

In 2018 there was this huge movement called metoo. (#metoo movement) Women were tweeting about issues where they’ve been sexually harassed or even abused (mostly) by other men. All around the world, women were starting to come out and speak out about instances of their harassment or abuse by men. Especially by powerful men. Things started to come out that had previously been kept secret by wealth, power, and influence.

In the heat of #metoo movement, in December 2018 amber heard published an article in the Washington post about domestic violence. Now, in the article she doesn’t explicitly name Johnny Depp but based on the things that she wrote and based on the context that everyone pretty much knew about the divorce that they went through, everyone reasonably concluded that what she was talking about was her relationship with Johnny Depp.

The immediate result of this article getting published was that Johnny Depp got canceled. Even though he basically invented the role of Captain Jack Sparrow, Disney dropped him from the subsequent pirates of the Caribbean movie.

That’s how much power these allegations are. So a few months later in March 2019, Johnny Depp sued Amber Heard for defamation for $50 million. (Defamation means when the defendant has lied about the plaintiff and they’ve lied in such a way that they’ve caused massive reputational harm.)

Now in this particular case, Johnny Depp was suing Amber Heard for defamation for the statements that she made in the Washington post article that suggested that he had physically abused her during their relationship. Heard counter-sued for $100 million, saying Depp smeared her by calling her a liar.

So now you have two parties that are suing one another for defamation for various statements that they have made related to whether or not Johnny Depp physically abused Amber Heard during their relationship.

So what do YOU think ?

Was Johnny Depp wronged when he got canceled after amber heard came out with this Washington Post article or is Johnny Depp abusing the legal process by trying to silence a victim that he abused?
